ROXIE

WHEN I CURL my fingers around the doorknob of my place, my heart sets off in anticipation. Beating, beating so hard it makes me breathless. I have gone through the meetings with just half a mind. My brain and my heart and my body could only care about seeing Jaxon again.

In my house. He’s in my house.

When I gave him the keys, I didn’t even think about how it would look. Desperate? Would he see I wasn’t that tidy of a person and give up on me? He spent the entire morning here. He had the time to check my stuff out and put the pieces of my personality together.

Is he still going to like me?

But when I open the door, he hasn’t left. A weekend bag that doesn’t belong to me is on my couch. There’s the smell of homemade food wafting from the kitchen. The clothes I had left over a chair are not there anymore.

My stomach turns, between nervousness and hunger. “Jaxon?”

He peeks from the kitchen. A smile takes his face. “Hi.”

“Hi.”

We stare for a long moment, two grinning idiots. And it’s so cute it makes my heart swell. Damn. I’m in love with him. I’ve fallen so quickly I didn’t even notice. Not until I hit the ground. That day I left him behind was the most painful one I had ever experienced. Thought he’d never want me. Thought regret would end me.

“How was your day?” He asks when I enter the kitchen. Jaxon’s handsome face beams at me as I reach out and curl my hands around his hips. He hugs me back, his face hovering close to mine.

“My morning was horrible. Produced nothing. Zero. Could only think about you.” I crane my neck, standing on tiptoes to brush our lips together.

He pecks me on the lips and grunts. I can feel his hardness against my lower belly. That was fast. Holding me around the elbows, he takes a step back, creating some distance between us. “Look, beautiful. Don’t get me wrong. I want to touch you more than anything in my existence. But if I do, one thing will lead to another and lunch will get cold.”

I laugh, shaking my head and pulling my hands back in a sign of surrender. “Sorry, you’re right. What are you up to?”

As Jaxon puts the finishing touches to a rich coconut curry with chicken soup (I didn’t even know it was a thing, how in the world is he such an excellent cook?), I tell him of my slow morning. Then it’s his turn, and he tells me he was looking around my place (looked hell-a cute apologizing) and tidied up some stuff. He also looked up online for a soup he could fix for me and went to the supermarket down the block to grab the ingredients.

We sit down across from each other at my table, and I groan in bone-deep satisfaction every time I put a spoon in my mouth. “Seriously, Jaxon. You cook so well.
